A gas balloon is any balloon that stays aloft due to being filled with a gas less dense than air or lighter than air (such as helium or hydrogen). A gas balloon may also be called a Charlire for its inventor, the Frenchman Jacques Charles. Today, familiar gas balloons include large blimps and small rubber party balloons. Blimps have displaced zeppelins (which are not balloons) as the dominant form of airship.

A moored balloon is an inflated fabric structure, often shaped like an airship and usually filled with helium, that is restrained by a cable attached to the ground or a vehicle. Moored balloons differ from airships and free balloons in that it is not free-flying. Moored balloons are sometimes called aerostats. However, the term aerostat can also be used to refer to all lighter-than-air aircraft. In this broader sense, moored balloons are a type of aerostat.

Vacuum Airship

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! A vacuum airship, also known as a vacuum balloon, is a type of aircraft. First proposed by Italian monk Franceso de Lana in 1670, the vacuum balloon would be the ultimate expression of displacement lift power. A frequent topic of blue sky thinking, the basic principle has remained the same: a container strong enough to preserve a vacuum that displaces sufficient air to lift the container and an additional load. However, construction of a container strong enough to withstand atmospheric pressure while at the same time being lighter than the air it displaces is currently just beyond the realm of possibility given current technology.

Joseph-Michel Montgolfier (26 August 1740 26 June 1810) and Jacques-Étienne Montgolfier (6 January 1745 2 August 1799) were the inventors of the montgolfièrestyle hot air balloon, globe aérostatique or airship. The brothers succeeded in launching the first manned ascent, carrying a young physician, Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier, and an audacious army officer, François Laurent d'Arlandes, into the sky. Later, in December 1783 in recognition of their achievement, their father Pierre was elevated to the nobility and the hereditary appellation of de Montgolfier by King Louis XVI of France.
