The Mystery Airships were a class of unidentified flying objects, the best-known series of which were reported in newspapers in western states of the U.S., starting in 1896 and continuing into 1897. The reported ships were usually said to be a type of dirigible, and were usually differentiated from gliders or hot air balloons. The best-known wave of airship tales was largely confined to North America, but according to Jerome Clark, similar reports were made worldwide, early as the 1880s, and late as the 1990s. This alternative to conventional thrust propulsion requires a cyclical change in net buoyancy (buoyancy minus weight). Methods have proved efficient in water. Underwater Gliders undertake long missions covering vast distances using little power. High altitude, long endurance craft can perform many functions provided by satellites at potentially much lower cost. Such functions include meteorological monitoring, surveillance, and communications. The proposed craft is a super-pressure, helium- filled, aerodynamic airship. It would use a blower to fill an inner bladder with ambient air thus increasing its weight. The airship can then glide forward as it descends. After a valve is opened to release the ballast air, the airship becomes light enough to ascend while again gliding forward. This process can be repeated indefinitely.

Nonlinear backstepping control for an underactu...

This book proposes a new trajectory tracking control approach for an underactuated stratospheric airship. There is a two-level structure of the proposed controller. A low-level controller based on nonlinear backstepping method, with the rigid body dynamics expressed on vector form, stabilizes the attitude and velocity of the airship, while a high-level controller performs guidance and trajectory tracking task in the three dimensional (3-D) space. Furthermore, a control allocation module based on active set algorithm is incorporated into the low-level controller to optimize the practical control inputs under constraints of actuator saturation. The closed-loop trajectory tracking control plant is proved to be globally exponentially stable through Lyapunov theory. Finally, simulations show that nonlinear backstepping trajectory tracking controller can achieve desired tracking performances even if the airship is affected by time delay inputs and exogenous disturbances.
