Exploiting Attitude Sensing in Vision-based Nav...

In this thesis, an attitude sensor is used to compensate the rotational camera motion, and to generate virtual images to simulate pure translation motion. This compensation is made possible by a calibration routine which determines the rotation between the camera and inertial sensor frames. The objective is to facilitate vision-based tasks such as navigation over smooth terrain, 3D point cloud registration, and image mosaicing. In the rotation-compensated, pure translation case, homographies are reduced to planar homologies. In the particular case where the ground plane is horizontal, the relative pose between two views can also be recovered by directly nding a rigid transformation to register corresponding scene coordinates. These models perform fairly accurately especially when estimating the vertical component. The results include recovering trajectories of hundreds of meters for an airship UAV and comparison with GPS data, and using a 3D graph optimization SLAM package to minimize the drift in visual odometry after recovering other relative pose constraints.

This book proposes a new trajectory tracking control approach for an underactuated stratospheric airship. There is a two-level structure of the proposed controller. A low-level controller based on nonlinear backstepping method, with the rigid body dynamics expressed on vector form, stabilizes the attitude and velocity of the airship, while a high-level controller performs guidance and trajectory tracking task in the three dimensional (3-D) space. Furthermore, a control allocation module based on active set algorithm is incorporated into the low-level controller to optimize the practical control inputs under constraints of actuator saturation. The closed-loop trajectory tracking control plant is proved to be globally exponentially stable through Lyapunov theory. Finally, simulations show that nonlinear backstepping trajectory tracking controller can achieve desired tracking performances even if the airship is affected by time delay inputs and exogenous disturbances.

USS Akron (ZRS-4) was a helium-filled rigid airship of the United States Navy that was lost in a weather-related accident off the New Jersey coast early on April 4, 1933, killing 73 of the 76 crew and passengers on board. During its accident-prone 18-month term of service, the airship also served as a flying aircraft carrier for launching F9C "Sparrowhawk" biplanes. At 785 feet (239 m) long, 20 ft (6 m) shorter than the German commercial airship LZ 129 Hindenburg, the Akron and sister airship, the USS Macon (ZRS-5), were amongst the largest flying objects in the world. Although the Hindenburg was longer, it was filled with hydrogen, so the two airships still hold the world record for helium-filled airships.
